How to Adopt Course Materials & Textbooks in Canvas

Overview

Using My Bookstore Materials, the Follett Access to Course Essentials (ACE) program in Canvas simplifies how faculty choose and manage resources for their classes. This guide offers step-by-step instructions for selecting new materials, reusing previous choices, and overseeing course material adoption through the Follett Discover tool in Canvas. By following this process, faculty can efficiently prepare their courses with the necessary, recommended, or optional materials for their students.

Adopting Course Materials

To adopt course materials in Canvas:

Log in to Canvas.
Select Account from the Global Navigation menu.
Click My Bookstore Materials.
If prompted, select the appropriate term from the dropdown.
To begin searching for materials in, type in your Subject under your selected course. Alternatively, you can select the appropriate option at the bottom of the course card if you are not using any materials or only Open Education Resources (OER).
You can also use the global search bar to look for course materials and supplies by keyword, author, title, or 13-digit ISBN.
Choose your course materials and click View Details where you can then view descriptions of the content, the table of contents, and availability options.
To adopt, first indicate whether each item is Required, Recommended, or Optional.
Next, click Adopt to finalize. You’ll receive a confirmation message once materials are successfully adopted.

My Library and Reusing Material

My Library allows you to view all of your course materials as well as quickly adopt titles you have adopted previously. To access, click on My Library from the main dashboard or the Copy button at the bottom of your course homepage within Follett.

To adopt multiple materials in your library:

Click Copy at the bottom of the page.
Select all the materials you wish to adopt.
Select the department and term when prompted.
Select all courses you would like to adopt materials for.
Click the Adopt Materials button.

Managing Course Adoptions

You can manage course adoptions by selecting the course banner or clicking the View All Materials link from the My Courses page. Once in the course management page, you will be able to:

Update the course discipline and subject
Adopt items form you library
View the status of your adopted materials
Remove adopted materials
Look for new materials
