Gradescope Overview
Gradescope is an online grading platform that helps make grading faster and more consistent, especially when assessing a lot of handwritten student work or assignments that involve computer programming.

Link Canvas and Gradescope
For seamless integration of Gradescope and Canvas (and gradebook syncing), you must first link your course.
- Navigate to the course in which you want to add the Gradescope assignment.
- Click on Gradescope in your course menu on the left.
- In the 'Link to Pomona College Canvas' window, choose a new Gradescope course (unless you have already created assignments for the course via Gradescope, in which case, choose an existing Gradescope course and find your course).
- Click the Link Course button to create the connection between Gradescope and Canvas for gradebook and assignment syncing.

- On the next screen, select your grading default settings and click Update Course.
You have now linked your Canvas course to Gradescope!
Sync Your Course Roster
Next, you need to sync your course roster (once students are enrolled).
- Under the Things to Do heading, click the Roster link to add students to your course.
- Click the Sync Pomona College Canvas Roster button.
- Make a decision about notifying users via email and click the Sync Roster button.

You should now see your students' names appear.
Note: The roster in Gradescope does not get updated automatically, so if there are any changes to your course enrollment in Canvas, you'll have to re-sync your roster in Gradescope.
Create Your Assignment
Finally, you are ready to create your assignments/tests/quizzes. Make sure you have prepared the assignment/test/quiz template. Then follow the steps below.
- Click on Assignments in your Canvas course menu, not the Gradescope menu.
- Click the + Assignment button.
- Enter your assignment name and description.
- Modify settings as needed: points, assignment group, grade display, availability dates, due date, allowed attempts, etc.
- Locate the Submission Type drop-down and select External Tool.
- Click the Find button.

- In the new window, click on Gradescope.

- Choose to link with A new Gradescope Assignment (unless you already have one created; then choose existing).
- Click the Link Assignment button.
- Select your assignment type: Exam/Quiz, Homework/Problem Set, Bubble Sheet, Programming Assignment.
- Click Next.
- Enter the assignment name again, upload your PDF template, and choose your assignment settings.
- Click the Create Assignment button.
- Click Select to exit the Find window and secure the selection.
- Match the settings in Canvas that you made in Gradescope to avoid any discrepancies.
- Click Save or Save & Publish (if ready to publish).
- Create your outline and click the Save Outline button when finished.
You now have your Gradescope Assignment and corresponding gradebook column! You can also add the assignment to a module for sequencing and hide the Gradescope link in your course menu to avoid navigation confusion.
Publish Grades to Canvas
After students have submitted, you can grade the assignments by following the Gradescope assignment link by going to Grades and clicking on the assignment title. When you're done grading, click the Review Grades button. Once everything checks out, choose Post to Pomona College Canvas. The grades will sync to your Canvas gradebook and appear to students.
