The latter portion of this guide will cover how to share Kaltura Videos through the mediaspace.pomona.edu interface. You have the option of sharing via a generated link, embed code, or through a conveniently instantly generated email draft.
How to Publish your Videos to your Media Gallery
Because your course MyMedia space is only visible to you as the instructor, the first step in all sharing options is to publish your videos to your Media Gallery, the designated location for students to access course media made available to them. To accomplish this:
- Log into Canvas or Sakai.
- Click on your Kaltura Media Gallery.
Note: If you do not see Media Gallery, please click here.
- Click on the Media tab.
- Select the Add Media button.
- Locate the desired video you want to make public and select it by clicking on the checkmark next to it.
- Click Publish at the top.
The newly published video will appear along with any other videos made available to your course Media Gallery.
How to Embed your Videos using the Content Editor
You can share Kaltura media to any of the tools in your course site that make use of the Rich Content Editor, such as Canvas Pages, Sakai Lessons, assignments, and so on. In Canvas and Sakai, your video must first be published to your course Media Gallery.
In this example, you will see how to embed a video from the Kaltura Media Gallery into a Sakai forum. The process is similar for both Canvas and Sakai; however, in Canvas, the insert content button will look different (noted below).
- Click on the forum function on the left-side menu.
- Click New Forum.
- Input the relevant information for your title, description, and so on.
- In the Rich Content Editor space, Insert Content Item button that resembles a shopping cart icon.
Note: In Canvas, the shopping cart icon is replaced by the Kaltura logo.
- In the pop-up page that appears, you'll be able to select videos from your Media Gallery. Find the video you'd like to display and click embed.
The newly created forum post should display your Kaltura video, complete with play/pause functions.
How to Embed a Kaltura Video into a Lesson
- Log in to Sakai and navigate to the course and specific lesson where you want to add the video.
- Click the Add Content + button and select Add Text in the drop-down menu.
- Click on the shopping cart icon ()in the Rich Text Editor.
- Find the media you would like to insert and click the embed button () next to it.
An outline of a box where your media will be placed will appear in the text box.
- Place your cursor below the outline and add some text, explaining to users what they should do with the media and why.
E.g. Watch the above video to learn about the seven principles of Universal Design, which you will share your reflection on in this week's class discussion.
- Click the Save button.
Note: If you receive a notice in Sakai about HTML formatting tags or attributes, you can ignore it. Your content should still function as intended.
Your lesson should now include the embedded video (a thumbnail with a play icon overlaying it), the video's searchable and scrollable captions, and your explanatory text.
Note: You can follow similar steps to embed a Kaltura video within any Sakai tool that has the Rich Text Editor (e.g. Announcements, Assignment, etc.)
How to Embed a Kaltura Playlist
Embedding a Kaltura Playlist to a location in your Canvas or Sakai course site is fairly similar to embedding a Kaltura Video. Both require using the rich content editor tool and require your desired video to be published to your Kaltura Media Gallery.
In this example, you will see how to embed a Kaltura Playlist into a Sakai assignment. The same steps can be taken for embedding a Kaltura video into a Canvas or Sakai function that utilizes the rich content editor tool.
- Navigate to the assignment tab on the left-hand side menu.
- Click on the Add tab.
- Enter relevant information like the assignment's title, description, due date, and so on.
- In the rich content editor space, click on the Select Content Item button.
Note: In Canvas, the shopping cart icon is replaced by the Kaltura logo .
- In the pop-up page that appears, click on the Media Gallery Playlist tab.
- Click embed on the playlist of your choice.
- Click Post to save your changes.
When you select on the newly created assignment, you will see that you can begin playing the videos on your playlist in the playlist's designated order.
