GIS - How to Share your Map
A geographic information system (GIS) is a conceptualized framework that can capture and analyze spatial and geographic data. GIS applications are computer-based systems that enable users to create, store and edit spatial and non-spatial data, analyze the spatial information output, and visually share these results via maps.
If you experience issues with GIS, you may refer to the additional documentation or contact the ITS help desk at 909-621-8061 or servicedesk@pomona.edu.
Getting Started
- As you work on a map you should make sure to select “Save” in the top menu bar.
- When ready to log off, select “Save as” from the drop-down menu associated with the “Save” button. Here you can enter a title for you map, assign it to a category, add tags to facilitate finding your map, and add a quick description besides “Summary.” It is important to note you must provide at least one tag. There is also an option to “Save in Folder,” but for most there will only be one folder anyways.
- When ready, select “Save Map.”
- Now that you’ve saved your map, you’ll be able to find it under the “Content” tab that can be found at the top
Sharing your Map Privately
To share a map privately, you can share using a group. Once you create a group, you’ll add your map to the group contents, add group members and set the role for one member to be manager.
- From the top menu select “Groups.”
- Click “Create Group” at the top
- Under “Group Overview” input a name, summary, and tags for your group.
- Under “Group Membership” for “Who can view this group?” select “Only Group Members.” Accept the defaults for the other settings.
- When ready, select “Save.”
- From here you can select “Add items to groups.”
- Find your item from the list of items or using the search box, check the checkbox for it, and click “Add item.”
- Select “Invite users”
- Check the checkbox next to the members you want to add and select “Add members to group.”
- On the upper right-hand corner, select “Overview,” and then on the drop-down menu, click “Members.”
- Select the check box for the member you want to make the GIS manager and click “Update member’s group role.”
- From there, select “Manager,” and click “Save.”
Sharing your Map Publicly
- Go to the “Content” tab at the top of the page
- Select your item or map of interest by clicking on its title
- On the right-hand side, select “Share.”
- In the Share box that appears, select “Everyone.” Users also have the option to select “Organization” to have all members of their organization have access. Users may also leave the sharing level as the default, which is “Owner,” meaning only the owner of the item has access.
- Before, sharing users may also want to change their map’s thumbnail by selecting “Edit thumbnail.” From here, users can upload a custom thumbnail or create a thumbnail from their map.
- When ready, select “Save.”
- Go back to the “Map” tab at the top of the page
- Select your Map
- Select “Share”
From here, users can access a link to their map, share via Facebook or Twitter, or select “embed in website” to access an HTML code they can input into an existing website.
